Robert E. Flitton
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah—Robert “Bob” Eugene Flitton, 70, of Rigby, passed away Sept. 17, 2009, at Salt Lake Regional Hospital after complications from surgery.
He was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho on Dec. 11, 1938, to parents Leonard Eugene Flitton and Louise Melvina Merrill Flitton.
Mr. Flitton was an Eagle Scout, the first in Annis, Idaho, history and he graduated from Rigby High School in 1957.
He received an honorable discharge from the Idaho National Guard, CO A, 116th ENGR BN (C)(A) in 1958.
He also served as president of the Rigby Jaycees in 1964.
He was a carpenter by trade but worked a variety of jobs over the years.
He had a great love of the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter.
He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. A great day would start with the sun rising and setting with a fishing pole in hand.
Some of his fondest memories included the times he spent fishing with his brother, Eldon, and his uncle, Glenn Merrill.
He never met a stranger and would strike up a conversation with everyone. He had a way of making you feel comfortable around him and when he greeted you with his famous “good morning,” you just had to smile.
He loved barbecue ribs, Alaska and the Fourth of July.
He had a special place in his heart for all his children and especially his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
Survivors include his daughters, Betty Ramsey and husband Gary of Drewryville, Teresa Vaughn and husband Jeff of Tennessee and Shelley Stevens of Washington; sons, Darwin Flitton of Washington and Darrin Flitton and wife Jocelyn of Washington; his grandchildren, Keith Hopkins of California, Jessica Thompson and husband Mike of Drewryville, Logan Flitton and Michael Flitton of Washington, Anthony Roberts of Georgia, Matthew Roberts and Joshua Vaughn of Tennessee, John Flitton and Josie Flitton of Washington; three great- grandchildren, Caleb Hopkins-Wheeler of Hawaii, Malia Werndli and Madelyn Thompson of Drewryville; his brother, Vern Eldon Flitton and wife Dorothy of Shelley; and sister Barbara Thompson and husband Lyle of Rigby; his best friend and uncle Glen Merrill and wife Ranae of Rigby; special friend Connie Purkey of Rigby; aunts, Buelah Ashment of Idaho Falls, Dorothy Chase and husband Kenneth, Ileen Munford of Idaho Falls and Donnetta Merrill of Idaho Falls, Uncle Vearl Crystal of Rigby; many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was greatly loved and will be sorely missed. A service welcoming all friends and family will be held in the spring — his favorite time of year.
