Once again it’s October and Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the most common cancer that a woman may have to face in her lifetime. Approximately 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer. Know the facts on breast health, and, most importantly, do breast self exams monthly. Have a clinical breast exam yearly by your physician, and get a mammogram by age 40, or sooner if your doctor recommends.

Early detection is the best protection.

As a six-year breast cancer survivor/warrior, I have personally seen the strides in new treatments and diagnostics, thus making treatments easier than in the past and even fewer side effects.

Another part of treatment that can be vital to a woman’s recovery is finding support. Southampton Memorial Hospital has been very generous in sponsoring the Breast Cancer support group. Our group will celebrate five years as a group in November. Over 30 ladies have come to our meetings — some have passed, but left an imprint in our hearts.
