FARMVILLE—There is no doubt who is No. 1 in the state in the VISAA Division III football standings. Isle of Wight Academy, ranked No. 1 in the state coming into Friday night’s action, thrashed Fuqua School, the No. 2 ranked team, 41-8 in a Virginia Commonwealth Conference game.

IWA moved to 6-0 and will most likely keep its top ranking.

Friday night was the Daniel Brown and Justin Vick show. Brown rushed for two touchdowns of 5 and 8 yards, had a 45-yard touchdown pass to Vick, and ran back a kickoff 65 yards for a touchdown.

Vick also kicked two field goals — one from 48 yards and the other from 35 yards.

Isle of Wight rolled up 264 yards on the ground and another 58 yards through the air. Brown rushed for 103 yards on 12 carries and Heath Price rushed for 74 yards on 22 carries.

Dale Chapman said his team was focused to play against a top opponent from the VCC.

“We were very focused this week in practice. Our guys knew this was a very important game,” he said. “We probably played one of the best games we played all year. We played phenomenal defense and moved the ball well. All in all, I’m very pleased with the performance of the guys considering the environment Fuqua has down there.”

IWA plays at Broadwater Academy next Saturday at 3 p.m.
