RALEIGH, N.C.—Jean M. Boyd, 85, died Sept. 28, 2009, at Wake Medical Center.
Born Jean Marie Meharry on Feb. 28, 1924, in Brazil, Indiana, she graduated with honors from Brazil High School and went to work immediately as a government secretary.
In 1948, she married Henry E. Boyd Jr., who then served as the airport manager in Wilmington, N.C.
In 1952, the family moved to Schenectady, N.Y., where Mr. Boyd served as commissioner of aviation.
Mrs. Boyd was an active volunteer at her daughters’ elementary school and served as a Girl Scout leader.
The family returned to North Carolina in 1960 when Mr. Boyd accepted the position of manager (later director) of Raleigh-Durham Airport.
She worked as a volunteer at Aldert Root Elementary School; and in 1962, she accepted a full-time position with the Raleigh City Schools as an administrative assistant at Josephus Daniels Jr. High School.
She continued to serve the Raleigh and Wake County Public Schools until her retirement.
She worked at Carroll Middle School, Enloe High School and Athens Drive High School.
She concluded her career as the executive assistant to the regional assistant superintendent.
During her career, she was treasured by the teachers, parents and students she served as a deeply caring and kind individual.
Survivors include her brother, George Meharry (of Florida); her daughters, Nancy Jean Boyd and Janet Boyd Reed (both of Maryland); and by her grandchildren, Katharine Boyd Reed and Justin Boyd Reed.
The family will receive visitors at the Brown-Wynne Funeral Home at 300 St. Mary’s Street, Raleigh, N.C., from 7 until 9 p.m. on Sept. 30.
The funeral service took place at White Memorial Presbyterian Church, Raleigh, Thursday afternoon.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. today at Beechwood Cemetery in Boykins.
