NEWPORT NEWS—Who needs passing?

Southampton Academy rolled up 487 yards of rushing to down Hampton Roads Academy 29-6 in a non-conference football game Friday night.

Despite a truck-full of penalties, the Raiders (4-1) were able to control the ball the entire game and allowed the Navigators just 145 yards of offense, including 62 yards in the first half. The Raiders threw the ball just twice the entire game.

Leading the SA offense was John Hinkle, who rushed for 162 yards on 13 carries. David Bogese ran for 139 yards on 18 carries, and Jacob Rose added 111 yards on 13 carries for the Raiders.

“I thought David and Jacob ran the ball hard. We ran what we call a wedge up the middle and John broke it out a couple of times,” said Dale Marks, Southampton Academy head coach. “We’re not the speediest, but our backs like blocking for each other and you have to do that in this offense we run.”

Southampton Academy opened the scoring on a 93-yard drive on its first possession. After the Navigators lost a touchdown because of a holding penalty, the Raiders took over after a punt. Five plays later, Hinkle was pushing the ball up the middle when he broke free into the open field. After a stiff arm, he ran the ball 61 yards for a touchdown with 8:36 to play in the first quarter. Rose ran in the two-point conversion, and the Raiders led 8-0.

After HRA’s next possession failed to yield points, SA took over on its own 20 and quickly scored. Hinkle reeled off another 46-yard run, and Bogese ran for 29 yards to put the Raiders at the HRA 5. Two plays later, Bogese crashed the goal line from 1 yard out with 4:16 to play in the first quarter. Rose ran in the two-point conversion and the Raiders led 16-0.

Southampton Academy was then stymied on two drives because of penalties and a turnover. HRA could not move the ball, and the Raiders had another scoring drive before the half. Starting at their own 30, the Raiders steamrolled the ball 11 plays and scored on a 6-yard run by Bogese with 2:04 left in the half. The extra point pass failed and SA held a comfortable 22-0 lead, until the next play.

On the kickoff, Hampton Roads Academy’s Ty Smith took the kickoff and ran 82 yards for the Navigator’s lone score with 1:49 left in the half.

The Raiders added one more score for good measure. SA drove the ball 60 yards on six plays and hit paydirt when Bogese scored from 3 yards out with 1:16 to play in the third quarter. The drive featured a 14-yard run by Bogese and a 24-yard run by Rose.

Marks was happy about the win after last week’s heartbreaking loss to Fuqua. The Raiders led at halftime in that one before letting the victory slip away.

“We had a letdown last week. We got back to some fundamentals this week, and it really paid off,” Marks said.

Southampton Academy plays at Brunswick Academy next week.
