Mattrude P. Sharpe
PORTSMOUTH—Mattrude P. Sharpe, 75, died peacefully Sept. 4, 2009.
Born Jan. 27, 1934, in Branchville, to the late Ruffin and Gertrude Person, she attended Southampton County Training School, and later graduated from Virginia State College (University) in 1956 with a Bachelor in Education.
Mrs. Sharpe taught elementary school for several years.
She was a devoted member of New First Baptist Taylorsville where she served as a Sunday school teacher and a member of the senior choir and noonday prayer group until her health failed.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, Leroy Sharpe Sr.
Survivors include her children, Alveta Jones (Roland) of Atlanta, Leroy Sharpe Jr. (Sonja) of Chesapeake and Michelle Wiggins (James) of Portsmouth; grandchildren, Chavia, Jay, Jazmyne and Brandon; sister, Christine Flythe of New Jersey; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. in New First Baptist Taylorsville, Portsmouth, with the Rev. James Wynn officiating.
Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake.
