Bruton downs Southampton

WILLIAMSBURG—After a scoreless first half, Bruton scored two second quarter touchdowns to defeat Southampton 17-7 in non-conference football action Friday.

Bruton opened the scoring when Ricky Dickerson returned a fumble by D’quante Winborne 9 yards for a touchdown with 7:21 left in the half. Lincoln Kartcher’s extra point kick gave the Panthers a 7-0 lead.

Bruton followed with a 10-yard touchdown run by Lorenzo Taliaferio with 32 seconds left in the half. Kartcher booted the extra point to give the Panthers a 14-0 lead.

After a scoreless third quarter, Southampton got on the scoreboard when Andre Rawls ran 9 yards for a touchdown. Jason Lassiter booted the extra point to cut the Bruton lead to 14-7 with 9:11 left to play in the game.

Bruton finished the scoring with a 22-yard field goal by Kartcher with 4:54 left in the game.

Rawls led the Southampton attack with 136 yards on 24 carries. Taliaferio rushed for 121 yards on 18 carries for Bruton. For the Indians, quarterback Billy Nixon was 4-for-7 for 47 yards with one interception.

The Indians turned the ball over four times and also failed to score on three plays inside the 3 yard line in the first quarter.

“We made too many mistakes. The bottom line was we made mistakes and they didn’t,” said Littleton Parker, Southampton head coach.

The Indians play at Franklin at 7 p.m. Friday.
