AULANDER, N.C.—Sidney Richard Mitchell, 76, died Aug. 25, 2009, at his home, after battling a long illness of Parkinson’s disease.
Mr. Mitchell was born on Aug. 22, 1933, in Bertie County, a son of the late Sophie Rawls Mitchell and Percy and Margaret Mitchell.
He was a member and deacon of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Aulander and was a North Carolina Farm Bureau agent for 32 years.
He served in the U. S. Army from 1957 to 1963.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Rawls Mitchell; two stepdaughters, Frances Rawls Evans and husband Nicky of Murfreesboro, N.C. and Wanda Rawls King and husband Jim of Ahoskie, N.C.; two step-grandchildren, Jamie King and wife Melissa of Ahoskie and Sarah King of Ahoskie; five sisters, Patricia M. Penwell and Winnifred Mitchell, both of Aulander, Stella M. Hofler and husband Willie of Gatesville, N.C., Jo Sharion Winn and husband Tommy of Woodbridge and Julia M. Dixon and husband Robert of Grifton, N.C.; two brothers, Wilson L. Mitchell of Aulander and Julius C. Mitchell of Bluffton, S.C.; 14 nieces and nephews and 17 great-nieces and great-nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Len-ora M. Hughes and an infant brother, Percy M. Mitchell.
A celebration of life service was conducted Thursday in the Ashley Memorial Chapel at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie with the Rev. Dr. Jimmy Jarrell officiating.
Burial followed in Highland Memorial Gardens.
