The 2008 season at a glance

With Franklin High School winning a state championship last year, the high school football season went the full 16 weeks. Here is a week-to-week rundown of the 2008 season:

Week 1 — Isle of Wight Academy opens the defense of its 2008 VISFA Division III title with a 21-2 win over Bishop Sullivan, scoring 21 straight points. After taking a 6-0 lead, Tidewater Academy dropped a 45-6 decision to Portsmouth Christian.

Week 2 — Franklin opens the season with a 50-0 win over Northampton on a Thursday night home game. The Broncos rolled up 329 yards and scored three touchdowns on three plays from scrimmage in the first quarter. Windsor opened the season with a 20-7 win over Nansemond-Suffolk Academy. The Dukes held the Saints to just 52 yards passing and 80 yards rushing. Tidewater Academy fell 41-0 to Brunswick Academy. Southampton Academy gets beat 49-0 by Broadwater Academy in the season opener for the Raiders. The Vikings led 35-0 in the first quarter.

Week 3 — Windsor nailed Northampton 42-13. Freshman R.J. Edwards rushed for 136 yards and scored three touchdowns. Southampton Academy evened its record at 1-1 with a 22-6 win over Kenston Forest in a tropical rain storm. The Raiders held the Krusaders to just 32 yards rushing. Isle of Wight Academy beat Hampton Christian 35-19 after trailing 13-7. Blessed Sacrament Huguenot blasted Tidewater Academy 62-6. Southampton dropped its season opener to Tabb 35-0 on Monday night.

Week 4 ­— Windsor stayed unbeaten (3-0) with a 28-13 win over Northumberland. It was the first time since 1995 the Dukes opened the season at 3-0. Edwards rushed for 97 yards in the win. Southampton Academy inched past Fuqua School 29-28. Quarterback Tyler Lass went 5-for-5 through the air for 62 yards during the game-winning drive. SA won the game with 2.9 seconds to play. Isle of Wight Academy pounded Kenston Forest 56-14 for head coach Dale Chapman’s 100th win. Tidewater Academy fell 41-14 to Chincoteague. Franklin beat Southampton 24-6 in a Saturday night game in Courtland. Franklin rolled up 332 yards of offense.

Week 5 — Franklin trounced King & Queen 66-0, including 431 yards rushing. The Broncos led 54-0 at the half and allowed just 25 yards total offense. Windsor beat King William 21-13 to go to 4-0. Quarterback Kwamane Harris led the team in rushing and passing. Southampton Academy dropped its home opener 14-6 to Hampton Roads Academy. Isle of Wight Academy (4-0) beat Brunswick Academy 28-6 and scored the last 28 points of the game. Southampton (0-3) fell 31-24 to York. The Indians rallied from a 17-0 deficit to keep it close.

Week 6 — Franklin beat West Point 34-14 with a controversial ending. The game was stopped with 2:13 left to play after an incident in the end zone which ended up with five Franklin players suspended for the next game. Both teams were undefeated coming into the game. IWA routed Fuqua School 37-0 to go to 5-0. The Chargers were ranked number one in the Division III poll. Southampton Academy beat Brunswick Academy 28-20 with 362 yards of offense. Windsor suffered its first loss to Washington & Lee 36-15 in a Monday night game. Grafton beat Southampton 42-8 in a Monday night contest.

Week 7 — Southampton Academy (4-2) trounced Tidewater Academy 36-0. Seven different players scored for the Raiders. It was TA’s 27th straight loss. Franklin lost a 28-24 heartbreaker to Colonial Beach on the last play of the game. Both teams were undefeated. IWA (6-0) came form behind to beat Broadwater Academy 23-22. The Chargers were trailing 22-10 with 4:02 to play. Southampton won its first game of the season, a 12-7 victory over Warhill, with two second quarter touchdowns. Windsor downed Arcadia 33-0. R.J. Edwards rushed for 129 yards on seven carries and scored four touchdowns.

Week 8 — Windsor (6-1) pounded Charles City 37-0 with a second half explosion of 34 points. Franklin (5-1) beat Surry County 34-0. Isle of Wight Academy rocked Tidewater Academy 55-8 to go 7-0. The Chargers rolled up 474 yards
