John W. Hardy
WINDSOR—John William Hardy, 88, died Aug. 25, 2009.
Born in Martin County, N.C., he was the son of the late John Weldon and Annie C. Hardy. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Clarence and Dennis Hardy and sisters, Evelyn Hardy and Pat Matkins.
Mr. Hardy worked as a farmer until joining the Navy in 1940.
He served in the Pacific from 1940 until 1945 as chief torpedoman’s mate.
He was a Pearl Harbor survivor, serving on the USS Reid. Following his military service, he worked as a meat merchandiser for Colonial Stores for 33 years until his retirement. He was an avid sportsman, who loved hunting, fishing and gardening.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth Wynn Hardy; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Kenneth E. and Anne W. Hardy of Suffolk; daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Michael Rasnake of Zuni.; grandson, James Rasnake; brother, Elton Hardy; sister, Muriel Alford; numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral was conducted Thursday at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery by the Rev. Bill Eley.
