FRANKLIN—Elizabeth “Liz” Eller Underwood died Aug. 27, 2009, at her residence surrounded by her family.
She was born March 30, 1940 in Welch, W.Va., the daughter of the late Margaret Hagy and James Nelson Eller.
Mrs. Underwood was a graduate of Longwood College and taught English in Martinsville, Hampton and Southampton County.
She was a longtime member of Franklin Baptist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, and deacon.
Survivors include her husband of 44 years, John E. Underwood; daughters, Ann Smith of Charlottesville and Amy Simms and husband Lance of Franklin; beloved grandsons, Brendan Simms, Bryce Simms and Nathan Smith; one brother, James Nelson Eller Jr. and wife Darla of Savannah, Ga.; one sister-in-law, Barbara Holloman and husband E.L. of Ahoskie, N.C.; a special family friend, Nancy Phillips of Franklin; her nephews, Scott Eller and family of Charlotte, N.C. and Wade Eller and family of Centreville; many cousins and other extended family.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Franklin Baptist Church with the Rev. Sharon James officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Wright Funeral Home, and suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Franklin Baptist Church Music Fund, 208 N. High St. Franklin, VA 23851 or American Cancer Society, c/o Ms. Kathy Worrell, 717 Fairview Drive, Franklin, VA 23851.
