Mills P. Daughtrey Sr.
FRANKLIN—Mills Parker “Pete” Daughtrey Sr., 84, widower of Annie Mae Turner Daughtrey, died Aug. 11, 2009, at Sentara Leigh Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Nansemond County, a son of the late Edwin Parker and Sadie Holland Daughtrey and was predeceased by two sisters, Nell Story and Faye Turner, and one brother, Thomas E. Daughtrey.
Mr. Daughtrey was a retired assistant postmaster for the Franklin Post Office and was a former brakeman for the railroad as a young man.
He was an Army veteran of WWII and a retired First Sergeant for the Virginia National Guard.
He was a 50 year Mason, a former president of the Carrsville Ruritan Club and was a member of Franklin Congregational Christian Church.
He was an avid gardener who enjoyed sharing his vegetables with friends.
Survivors include his daughter, Robin D. Collins and husband Kevin of Berryville; his son, Mills Parker Daughtrey Jr.; granddaughter, Ashley Daughtrey, both of Suffolk; two sisters, Anne O’Brien of Franklin and Gladys Atkins of Midlothian; two brothers, Raymond Daughtrey of Holland and Edwin Daughtrey Jr. of Franklin and a host of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. James H. Hyatt Jr. officiating.
Interment will follow in Poplar Spring Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Wright Funeral Home and suggests memorials be made to the Franklin Congregational Christian Church, 412 N. High St., Franklin, VA 23851.
