FRANKLIN—His actions to secure a safe, warm place for a homeless woman to sleep on a cold night earned Franklin Police Sgt. Ronnie McClenny the city’s Star Performer Award.

Franklin Police Lt. Tim Whitt nominated McClenny for the award after witnessing him assist a homeless woman on a rainy night with temperatures dipping into the 40s. McClenny wouldn’t allow the woman to huddle on the street with her two bags of personal belongings; instead he made arrangements for her to spend the night in a local hotel.

McClenny paid for the hotel room out of his own pocket and didn’t seek any reimbursement.

“Your actions have improved the quality of life for the citizens of this city and beyond,” wrote the city’s Performance Enhancement Program Committee in a letter to McClenny.

Mayor Jim Councill presented the award to McClenny during Monday night’s City Council meeting.

“It’s really kind of neat when people do things above and beyond the call of duty,” Councill said.

As a recipient of the Star Performer Award, McClenny is now eligible for the city’s Employee of the Year Award.
