To the Editor:

In response to Rex Alphin’s poem titled “Old Friends,” I would like to suggest that he put down his glass, pick up his pen and write another poem about alcohol. First, he should educate himself about the effects, such as addiction, broken homes, spousal abuse, neglect and abuse of children, destruction, as well as traffic fatalities and health problems.

Law enforcement officers risk their lives and often lose them responding to alcohol-related incidents. We would not even need as much law enforcement if the one he’s so thankful to for discovering alcohol had used his time to a better advantage.

His article really isn’t giving the right message to the youth of today who will be the leaders of tomorrow. As for his biblical references, maybe he should read the Bible further where it states: “Refrain from strong drink, it can make a fool of a man and lead to drunkenness.”

I really think somewhere on his farm Rex has planted part of his brain along with the grain.
