Harriet C. Batten
SUFFOLK—Harriet C. Batten, 79, died July 19, 2009, in Sentara Obici Hospital.
She was a native of Isle of Wight County, but had been a resident of Smithfield for several years.
Ms. Batten retired from Gwaltney Foods in Smithfield after 30 years of service.
Educated in Isle of Wight County Public Schools System, she graduated from Isle of Wight Training School in 1950.
As a member of Campbell’s Chapel AME Church, she was a former member of the Senior Choir, the Golden Age Choir, the Willing Workers and the Missionary Circle.
Predeceased by her husband, Jessie Lee Croker; daughters, Carol Brodie and Mazie C. Wilson; brother, Enoch Pinner; and sister, Anna Pinner; she leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Sandra C. Smith and Charlyne Chandler, both of Windsor; one son, Jessie C. Croker (Victory) of Smithfield; a loving and faithful son-in-law, Nathan W. Smith of Chesapeake; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; several nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service was held Thursday at Campbell’s Chapel AME Church, Carrollton with the Rev. Vernon Ricks presiding.
Interment followed in Campbell’s Chapel Church Cemetery.
Tynes-Edwards Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
