SMITHFIELD—Wesley E. Bradshaw, 80, formerly of Waverly, died July 19, 2009.
Born in Southampton County on Jan. 6, 1929, he was the son of the late Charlie Lee Bradshaw Sr. and Mattie Buhls Bradshaw.
He was a past member of the Waverly Volunteer Fire Department and Waverly Volunteer Rescue Squad.
He and his brother ran the first squad call in Waverly.
He was a member of the Virginia Train Collectors Club. He was a part-time deputy for Sussex County and worked for the Town of Waverly as a police officer for a little over 40 years.
He was a member of the Virginia Association of the Virginia Police and a member of Burton’s Grove Christian Church. He was dedicated to serving his community and to his family. He was always willing to help anyone and had a special love for animals and music.
He was recognized by Norfolk Western Railroad for his prevention of a train collision while working as a police officer.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Lois Parsons Bradshaw; a daughter, Nancy B. Hearn and husband, David; a granddaughter, Keturah H. Epps and husband, Paul; two great grandchildren, Skylar S. and Dalton W. Epps, all of Smithfield; a sister, Gladys B. Gray of Portsmouth; a brother, W. Curtis Bradshaw of Waverly; and a large extended family.
He also leaves behind his dog, Elvira, whom he dearly loved.
He was predeceased by two brothers, John S. Bradshaw and Charlie L. Bradshaw Jr.
A funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Purviance Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home in Wakefield with the Rev. Roy Drake officiating. Burial will follow at the Waverly Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the funeral service.
