Joseph J. Barnes
GATES, N.C.—Joseph Jesse Barnes, 70, died July 18, 2009, in Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk.
Mr. Barnes was born in Norfolk and was the son of the late Joseph J. Sr. and Nellie Mae Spruill Barnes.
A retired equipment operator with J.H. Lee & Sons in Courtland, he was a Baptist by faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lillian Sipple Barnes.
Survivors include his wife, Angelina Meyerhofer Barnes; two daughters, Jo Anna Vick and husband Floyd and Charlotte Barnes, all of Gates; stepchildren, Suzanne Winchester and husband Carl of Grantham, N.H., and Steven Ruskuski and wife Patty of Chipley, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Joseph and Valerie Vick and Joanna and Laura Kay Winchester.
A funeral will be held today at 2 p.m. in the mausoleum chapel at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, 4569 Shoulders Hill Road, Suffolk, by the Rev. Wayne Eason.
Burial will follow on the cemetery grounds. Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, N.C., is handling arrangements.
