SMITHFIELD—James A.
“Shorty” Hall Sr., 85, died June 25, 2009, at Sentara Obici Hospital.
A native of Isle of Wight County, he was born Feb. 9, 1924, to the late Andrew and Mary Clemons Hall.
“Shorty,” as he was known by family and friends, was a faithful member of Emmanuel Baptist Church where he served on the Senior Choir, the Deacon Board, and as Church sexton until his health failed.
Mr. Hall retired from Newport News Shipbuilding, now Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding, as a supervisor in 1987 after 35 years of service in department X35.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II honorably discharged Oct. 31, 1946.
Survivors include his wife, Annie B. Hall; three daughters, Jolene H. Parker (William) of Smithfield, Margaret H. Wingo of Smithfield and Cathy D. Hall of Windsor; five sons, Morris G. Hall Sr. (Andria) of Smithfield, William A. Hall (Joyce) of Durham, N.C., Michael A. Hall (Robin) of Newport News, Tracey L. Hall Sr. (Beverly) of Alexandria and James A. Hall Jr. (Crystal) of Smithfield; 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews; and a special family friend, Barbara Parker.
A service of celebration was held Tuesday at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 11150 Emmanuel Church Road, Smithfield, with the Rev. Eldridge Lucas III officiating.
Burial was with military honors was in Mount Tabor COGIC cemetery, Smithfield.
Pretlow Chapman Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.
