E. Hunter Daughtrey Sr.
SUFFOLK—Edward Hunter Daughtrey Sr., 95, died June 20, 2009.
He was born in Carrsville. He was the last surviving child of Jasper and Susie Daughtrey.
Mr. Daughtrey proudly served the United States Navy, retiring as Lt. Commander in 1956.
He served in both oceans in World War II, in convoy duties in the North Atlantic and in the Solomon Islands in the Pacific.
He and the crew of the USS Alchiba received the Presidential Service Award for heroism after being torpedoed at Guadalcanal.
He was the oldest member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church in Franklin.
He served the church in several roles including deacon, treasurer and chair of the cemetery committee. He was also an active member of the Carrsville community, member of the Carrsville Ruritan Club and the first president of the Carrsville Volunteer Fire Department.
His sisters Dorothy Anderson, Elsie Godfrey, Edith Rawls, Mary Sue Richardson, Nell Howell, Ida Graves, brother Jasper Daughtrey and former daughter-in-law Mary Jo Daughtrey predeceased him.
Survivors include his loving wife, Frances, of 67 years; two sons Hunter and wife Janet Parsons of Durham, N.C., and Sid and wife Pat Grady Daughtrey of Suffolk.
Grandpa will be missed by grandchildren Heather and husband Ted Rabalais of Hillsborough, N.C., and Nathan Daughtrey of Greensboro, N.C.; great-grandchildren Jessica and Colby Rabalais and step-grandson John Douglas of Brooklyn, N.Y. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive him.
The family extends special appreciation to the staff and friends of Hillcrest Retirement Center and Nansemond Point Joyner Hall for their loving assistance.
The funeral will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Beaver Dam Baptist Church with Dr. Richard Peerey and Rev Charles Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Beaver Dam Cemetery and will be private.
The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service.
