Lloyd D. Taylor Sr.
NEWSOMS—Lloyd David Taylor Sr., 90, widower of Josie Cogsdale Taylor, died May 30, 2009, at his residence with family at his side.
He was born in Lunenburg County, a son of the late Lewis David and Martha Susan Callis Taylor and was predeceased by a brother, Dennis J. Taylor.
Mr. Taylor was a 1937 graduate of South Hill High School, attended Hargrave Military Academy and Wake Forest University.
He was an Army veteran of the 29th Infantry Division who landed with The First Wave on Omaha Beach on D-Day. He was a retired entrepreneur and former president of Southampton Tractor Co.
He was a member of Newsoms Baptist Church and later in life, attended Sunbeam Baptist Church. Mr. Taylor was a 62-year member of the Courtland Masonic Lodge #85, AF&AM.
Survivors include four daughters, June G. Taylor and Martha L. Taylor, both of Virginia Beach, Claire Suzanne Gates and husband Hugh of Wakefield and Betty Jo Taylor of Charlottesville; one son, L. David Taylor Jr. and daughter-in-law, Donna of Newsoms, who cared for him tirelessly; five grandchildren, Cullen Bryant of Greensboro, N.C., Louie Saunders of Chicago, Briana Brennan of Charlottesville, Mallory Taylor of Newsoms and Miles Taylor of Austin, Texas; and his cats, Blackie and Bud Taylor of Newsoms.
The funeral was conducted Tuesday at Wright Funeral Home with the Revs. Willis Switzer and Jason Wise officiating.
Interment, with military honors, followed in Hollywood Cemetery, Newsoms.
