PETA blasts Smithfield Foods

To the Editor:

The filthy conditions in Smithfield Foods’ hog farms routinely threaten area residents’ health. Studies show that people who live near pig farms are more likely to suffer from nausea, headaches, respiratory problems and other ailments.

Smithfield Foods hasn’t shown much genuine concern for animal welfare, either. Although the company pledged to phase out the use of cruel gestation crates to confine pregnant pigs, it hasn’t taken any significant steps to do so.

And, Smithfield’s transport trucks have overturned on Virginia highways numerous times, leaving hundreds of frightened, injured animals languishing on the roads with no veterinary care.

We would all be better off if we cut the pork from our diets.
