Russell L. Gilchrist Sr.
DENDRON—Russell Lee Gilchrist Sr., 75, died May 9, 2009, peacefully with his wife and children at his bedside at Memorial Regional Hospital in Mechanicsville, after a brief illness.
He accepted Christ at an early age and joined St. Paul Holiness Church, where he served as the financial clerk, a member of the Trustee Board and sang with several choirs.
In addition, he was machine specialist at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company until his retirement in 1996.
Survivors include a devoted wife of 49 years, Jane A. Gilchrist of Dendron; four children, Russell L. Gilchrist of Varina, Alvin R. Gilchrist of Petersburg, Loretta G. Richardson (Douglas) of Richmond and Larry Gilchrist of Colonial Heights; three sisters, Ethel Clarke (Rogers) of Ivor, Virene Howell (Paul) of Surry and Delores Savedge of Elberon; one brother, Calvin Gilchrist of Portsmouth; one uncle, William Gilchrist (Flossie); one aunt, Katherine Cuyler of Texas; three grandchildren, Alexis, Douglas Jr. and Nicholas Richardson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Holiness Church.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Viewing and visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
He will lie-in-state one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
