SMITHFIELD—Andrew S. Parsons, 81, a former resident of Waverly, died April 29, 2009, at his residence.
Born June 20, 1927, in Southampton County, he was the son of the late James Lafayette Parsons Sr. and Rena Stephenson Parsons.
Mr. Parsons retired in 1984 from VDOT, Waverly residence office, after 32 1/2 years of employment.
He was a loyal and dedicated lifetime member of Burton’s Grove Christian Church UCC in Wakefield, where he served as trustee and deacon for many years and he was also a member of the Hopewell Moose Lodge.
He was a loving husband and father.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James L. Parsons Jr., and sisters, Martha P. Logan and Betty P. Norman.
In addition to his wife of 59 1/2 years, Celia Emory Parsons, he is survived by a daughter, Dianne Parsons Gwaltney, a loving son-in-law, Alton H. Gwaltney Jr.; a sister, Lois Parsons Bradshaw; numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral was to be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Burton’s Grove Christian Church UCC, Wakefield, with the Rev. Roy Drake officiating.
The family was to receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial was to follow in Waverly Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Burton’s Grove Christian Church UCC, 202 Jefferson Drive, Smithfield, VA 23430.
Purviance Chapel of J.T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home and Cremation Services was in charge of arrangements.
