Walter R. Barnes
FRANKLIN—Walter R. Barnes died April 20, 2009, in his home.
Walter was a native of Isle of Wight County, born May 13, 1943 to the late Daniel and Inez Ricks Barnes.
During the early years of his life, he joined Piney Grove Baptist Church.
Mr. Barnes was a Vietnam Veteran, serving his country in the U.S. Army. He also served in the National Guard.
Walter was employed as a police officer for the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. for 18 years. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police.
Survivors include one sister, Ella Lankford (Marvin) of Portsmouth; one brother, McDaniel “Sugar Meat” Barnes (Gloria) of Franklin; two nieces, LaKeisha Bonner (Bryan) and Salesha Lankford; one great niece, Kyrielle Bonner and many cousins.
A homegoing service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, where the Rev. Alvin Rawlings will deliver the message.
Burial is in the Southview Cemetery.
Wm. M. Johnson & Sons Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
