Ulysses S. Johnson
PETERSBURG—Ulysses S. Johnson, 86, died April 18, 2009, at his residence.
He was a native of Southampton County and was the son of the late Robert Henry Johnson Sr. and Catherine White Johnson.
Mr. Johnson was a graduate of Virginia State University and a veteran of the Army. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1985.
He was a member of New Branch Baptist Church of Ivor, where he was a Sunday school teacher and church musician.
He was also director and organist of the Men’s Choir of First Baptist Church of Disputanta.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Alice Johnson; one son, Ronald Johnson of Petersburg; one sister, Doris Wilson of Atlanta; one granddaughter, Tiffany Gillum of Gaithersburg, Md.; two great-grandchildren, Michael and Mark Gillum of Gaithersburg; one sister-in-law, Levenia Johnson of Ivor; one brother-in-law, Clyde Gay (Daisy) of Wakefield; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
A service to celebrate his life was held Thursday at New Branch Baptist Church, Ivor, officiated by the Rev. Frank Aikens.
Interment will be in the Davis Family Cemetery, Ivor.
Crocker Funeral Home, Suffolk, is handled arrangements.
