Homer Cook Sr.
IVOR—Homer Cook Sr., 93, died April 16, 2009, in Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk after a brief illness.
Born on July 25, 1915 in Southampton County, he was the son of the late Sam and Molly Britt Cook.
He was the widower of Mary Virginia Saunders Cook and was predeceased by two sons, Homer Cook Jr. and Clyde F. Cook.
Survivors include two daughters, Jean Bradshaw and husband “JJ” of Franklin and Grace Rodgester of Ivor; two sons, Sam W. “Nick” Cook and wife Joan of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. and Edward Lee Cook and wife Nancy of Ivor; daughters-in-law, Diane Cook and Lorene Cook; a niece, Lucy Spencer of Norfolk; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren.
At the time of his death, he was the oldest living member of Tucker Swamp Baptist Church.
He was a Southampton County farmer most of his life and also worked as a truck driver for the Virginia Department of Transportation for 11 years.
A funeral service will be held at Tucker Swamp Baptist Church in Zuni at 2 p.m. on Sunday by the Rev. William E. Dawson.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Tucker Swamp Baptist Church in Zuni on Saturday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.
There will be a reception for family and friends in the Family Life Center of the church following the burial Sunday.
