NORFOLK—Ruth C. Holmes, 85, died March 13, 2009, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
She was born May 8, 1923, to the late Georgia and Joseph Claude in Newsoms.
She was educated in the Southampton County Whitemeadows school system.
Mrs. Holmes retired from Fine’s Men Shop as a seamstress.
She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, Norfolk, where she served as chaplain of the Women’s Missionary Union.
She was also a member of the NAACP.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Holmes; a son, Linwood Rollins; and a daughter, Vivian Artis.
Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy Graves; two sons, Willie Lee Rollins (Hazel) and Dalious Rollins (Gloria); one brother, Lloyd Claude (Roberta); 20 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; 26 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
A funeral was to be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Garden of Prayer Worship Center, 1001 Church St. The Rev. Keith Jones will officiate.
Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk.
Family and friends will assemble at 709 W. 26th St. one hour prior to the service for the procession to the church.
Metropolitan Funeral Service, Granby Street Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
