SA wins baseball opener over Tidewater Academy

Tyler Lass hit a solo home run and Matthew Pitts hit a two-run shot Wednesday to power Southampton Academy past Tidewater Academy 7-2 in the opening baseball game for both teams.
The Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings. Martin Hellyer scored the first run on a double by Ferly Yerby in the first inning. Josh Clarke scored the second run on an infield single by Jimmy Rogers in the second inning.
Dillon Pearson pitched four strong innings for the Warriors, giving up two unearned runs in the fourth on a line drive by Cameron Ray that was dropped in the outfield.
Blake Drewry pitched four innings for the Raiders and settled down to shut out the Warriors in the third and fourth frames. Lass led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer to right field to give the Raiders a 3-2 lead. After Jacob Rose walked, Pitts hit a 3-2 fastball over the left-centerfield fence to give the Raiders a 5-2 lead.
Ray came in and pitched the fifth and sixth innings, giving up no runs. The Raiders scored their final two runs on a hard-hit ground ball by John Hinkle that got past the infield with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth. Tyler Lass pitched the final scoreless inning for the Raiders.
The Raiders had six hits and took advantage of four Tidewater Academy errors. Tidewater managed five hits. The Raiders committed one error.
SA travels Friday to Isle of Wight Academy for a 4 p.m. game and hosts Amelia Academy at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
