COURTLAND—Willis Lloyd Edwards III was sentenced to 46 months in prison Thursday on several felony charges.

Edwards, an Ivor resident, was charged in Southampton County Circuit Court with three counts of assault on a law enforcement officer, one charge of attempting to disarm an officer and one charge of threatening to burn or bomb.

Officers went to Edwards’ New Road home in August 2007 in response to a complaint that Edwards’ wife was being held against her will. When officers tried to take Edwards into custody, he grabbed one officer’s firearm and punched another.

“The judge considered the arguments and weighed the community safety concerns, along with the need for rehabilitation and punishment in fashioning the sentences which were imposed,” Southampton County Commonwealth’s Attorney Eric Cooke said.
