WAVERLY—Joan Ethal Conner Evans died Feb. 20, 2009.
She was the seventh of nine children born to late George and Susie Conner in Surry County.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Annie Nichols, and a brother, McKinley Conner.
Mrs. Evans was a lifelong member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church.
At an early age she joined the church and served to the fullest in several capacities. She loved her church and loved to sing and dance for the Lord.
She was a faithful active member of the First Senior Choir and Mass Choir until her illness.
She was also a member of the Missionary and was educated in the Surry County School System.
Survivors include two daughters, Karon Holmes of the home and Wanda Clary of Smithfield; one son, Anthony Evans; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Pearl Judkins (James) of Wakefield and Geneva Harris of Waverly; four brothers, Royal Conner and Stanley Conner (Jereline), both of Wakefield, David Conner (Anne) of Washington, D.C. and George Conner Jr. (Octavia) of Smithfield; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who loved her richly.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Wakefield, with the Rev. Leslie Holloway, pastor, officiating.
The interment will be in Booker T. Memorial Park, Wakefield.
The family will assemble at 33203 Walnut Hill Road, Waverly, at 12:15 on the day of service.
