IWA advances with Vaughan’s 500th career win

Isle of Wight Academy won its opener in the Metro Conference boys’ basketball tournament – and Charger coach Ben Vaughan got his 500th career victory – with a 70-67 overtime decision against Portsmouth Christian at StoneBridge School on Thursday night.

Third-seeded IWA improved to 23-7 and advanced to today’s 7:30 p.m. semifinals against second-seeded Williamsburg Christian.

The winner will play in Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. championship game against the Atlantic Shores-Hampton Christian winner.

Daniel Brown led the Chargers Thursday night with 23 points, while Brandon Privette added 22, including five consecutive free throws in overtime. Privette also sank two free throws with six seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
