FARMVILLE-The Southampton Academy boys’ basketball team pulled off an upset in the first round of the Virginia Commonwealth Conference tournament Tuesday night.

The Raiders, seeded seventh, knocked off second-ranked Fuqua School 67-61 to move to the tournament semifinals.

SA will play Steward School at 8:15 p.m. Friday at Richard Bland College in Petersburg. The winner of that game goes to the conference championship at 8 p.m. Saturday at Richard Bland.

Hudson Bryant, SA head coach, said the Raiders (5-12 in the conference) had lost by double digits to Fuqua both times during the regular season.

“They got out to an eight-point lead in the first quarter. We got down just like we did the last two times. By the end of the third quarter, we were up by one,” Bryant said. “When they got the lead, they felt like they were good enough to compete with them. We did a good job of hitting our free throws at the end of the game.”

The SA girls play Friday at 3 p.m. against Amelia Academy in the semifinals. The winner of that game plays in the VCC championship at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Both games are at Richard Bland College.
