Tax relief available for disabled, elderly

Southampton County recently sent out forms to disabled and elderly residents who might qualify for personal property tax relief.

But those people who think they might qualify and haven’t received a form still have time to get one.

“We have no way of knowing who is elderly and handicapped, so we don’t send the forms to everybody,” said Southampton County Commissioner of the Revenue Amy Carr.

Applications are available at the Southampton County Government Center in Courtland and must be returned by March 1.

Relief, which can be up to 90 percent, is granted on a sliding scale depending on a person’s personal property, Carr said.

“The relief is only up to one acre and the dwelling on the acre,” Carr said.

Carr said the number of applicants for the tax relief more than doubled from 2007 to 2008.
