CAPRON—John Wayne Ausbon, 64, died Jan. 9, 2009, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Mr. Ausbon, a native of the Leggett’s Crossroads community of Beaufort County was a graduate of Bear Grass High School, Class of 1963.
He received a Bachelor’s Degree from Atlantic Christian College in 1968 and his Master’s Degree from Virginia State University, Petersburg.
For the past 40 years he had lived in Virginia where he was formerly employed as an academic teacher with the Southampton Correctional Center in Capron and was currently serving as principal and an academic teacher with the Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt. A member of the Correctional Educators of America, he had served as president and vice-president of the Virginia Association of Correctional Educators.
He was currently serving on the City Council of Capron. He was an active member of the Ruritans of Capron and was serving as secretary.
He was a member of Piney Grove FWB Church, Beaufort County.
He was preceded in death by his parents, LeRoy and Mary Ausbon; sisters, Mary Wheatcraft, Lillie Mae Fulford, and Shirley Revels; and brothers, James Ausbon, Alton Ausbon and Burnace Ausbon.
Survivors include a sister, Sadie Gurkin and husband Billy, a brother, Steve Ausbon and wife Karen, all of Greenville, N.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was conducted Tuesday in Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church in Beaufort County.
Burial was in Martin Memorial Gardens, Williamston, N.C.
A memorial service will be held in Capron at the Capron United Methodist Church on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The family will receive friends at the home of Sadie and Billy Gurkin, 11055 Cherry Run Road, Greenville.
