Southampton Academy knocked off previously undefeated and fourth-ranked Brunswick Academy 46-35 in girls’ basketball action Thursday night.

The Lady Raiders, ranked sixth in the state among Virginia Independent Schools Division 3 teams, improved to 9-1 overall and 5-1 in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference.

SA jumped out to an early 14-6 lead, stretched its advantage to 30-16 at halftime and held off a third-quarter charge from Brunswick.

Lady Raider Coach Burdette Gatten attributed the victory to his squad’s strong defense, led by Forrest Best.

Gabby Gatten led SA offensively with 20 points. Lindsay Raulston added 13 points and 13 rebounds.
