Odell Vann
SUFFOLK—On Dec. 20, 2008, in the quietness of the morning, in God’s infinite wisdom, He stretched forth His hand and called out from earthly labor to her heavenly reward, Odell Vann.
Odell, 82, was born to the late Claude and Roberta Carter on Feb. 2, 1926, in Southampton County, Va.; then at the age of 12 with her family she moved to Hertford County, N.C. Odell was next to the youngest of 14 children.
Odell loved the Lord deeply and was a faithful member of Genesis Christian Fellowship Church, Hampton, Va., where she was one of the mothers of the church. She was a former member of First United Baptist Church, Newport News, Va., where she served as a nurse’s aid.
Preceding her in death are her mother and father; a son, Calvin Vann; a daughter, Belinda Hicks; a granddaughter, Philamena Vann-Parrott; and all her siblings.
She leaves to cherish her memories, three loving daughters, Margaret Chandler, Hampton, Va., Betty Johnson (Care-giver) Suffolk, Va., and Shemica Pope, Hampton, Va.; three sons, Crist, Raymond and Jawon Vann of Newport News, Va.; 15 grandchildren, Efrem, Michael, Margueritte, JaDonna, Pamela, Cenie, Athena, John, Calvin, Crist Jr, Armonica, Phylicia, Timothy, Raymond and Eric; several great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and many extended family members.
The viewing will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, at Nicholson-Cummings Funeral Home, 4304 Victoria Blvd., Hampton, Va. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, at Morning Star Baptist Church, 2717 N. Armistead Avenue, Hampton, Va. Interment will be in Hampton Memorial Garden.
