FRANKLIN—Almost three weeks ago, the Franklin High School football team won the Group A. Division 1 state football championship. Now, the accolades are coming in.

Defensive back Donzell Shearin and tackle Daquan Frazier were both named to the Associated Press All-State first team. Franklin head coach Darren Parker was also named AP Group A Coach of the Year.

Virginia Preps.com had four Franklin players on its Group A All-State list — Shearin and Frazier also made that list. Defensive end DaQuan Clemons and linebacker Antonio Smith were also selections. Virginia Preps named Parker Division 1 Coach of the Year.

Shearin, also Franklin’s quarterback, made the team for his defensive prowess. He picked off eight passes on the season, including two in the state championship game. Frazier was one of the offensive linemen that helped spring Isaiah Hudson to a 1,000-yard rushing season. Antonio Smith had 52 tackles, including five in the state championship game.

Franklin head coach Darren Parker considers individual awards as team awards.

“Everybody who received an honor realizes it was because of the grace of God and because of the team,” he said. “Anybody named off our team, they give the credit to the 10 other guys on the field that helped make that happen.”

Parker said the same thing about his award.

“As for the coach of the year, I always consider that as the staff of the year,” he said. “I have great assistant coaches.”
