HAMPTON—Ida Mae Covington died Nov. 26, 2008.
She was born in Windsor, the youngest girl of the late George and Gladys (Eley) Smith.
Mrs. Covington was a beloved devoted wife and mother. A much loved aunt, who cherished friends and committed church member.
She accepted Christ at an early age at Chapel Grove United Church of Christ in Windsor.
She was a faithful member of Greater Walters AME Zion Church in Newport News, where she served as an usher and in many other capacities including pastor’s aid and assisting with vacation bible school.
She was a dedicated employee for many years at the Office of Human Affairs in Newport News.
Prior to her retirement, she worked for New Hampton Inc.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Rochell Smith; her sisters, Gladys Lee Stokes, Mary Ponds and Geneva Bivens.
Survivors include her loving husband, Leslie Covington; her son, Ernest “ Hank” Ford and wife Kathy of Virginia Beach; her daughters, Mona Cameron of Fredricksburg and Deanna Rand and husband Wendell of Jacksonville, N.C.; five grandchildren, Jason and Joshua Geiger of Fredericksburg, Terrell, Sherrell and Ondra Ford-Rand of Jacksonville, N.C.; three brothers, George Smith and wife Edith of Jersey City, N.J., Ben Smith and wife Young Suk of California and Willie Smith and wife Janetta of East Orange, N.J.; a sister-in-law, Margie Smith of Jersey City, N.J.; a brother-in-law, Meneco Ponds of Winston Salem, N.C. ; a god sister, Dorothy “ Cookie” Goggans of Newark, N.J. and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. today at Greater Walter AME Zion Church with the Rev. Arrington, officiating.
Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
Cooke Bros. Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
