Annis B. Jones
SMITHFIELD—Annis Barlow Jones, 100, died Nov. 27, 2008, in Sentara Obici Hospital.
She was a native of Isle of Wight and homemaker.
Mrs. Jones graduated from Smithfield High School in 1927.
She was a member of Smithfield Baptist Church and previously Bacon’s Castle Baptist Church.
She was also an honorary member of the Smithfield Women’s Club.
She performed volunteer work for many causes both before and after the death of her husband in 1982, most notably at the Riverside Convalescent Home in Smithfield.
Many times she was older than the residents whom she assisted. She always gave tirelessly of herself to anyone in need by cooking, sewing or just lending a hand whenever needed.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Ben W. Jones Sr.; daughter, Lucy Jones Cornett; daughter-in-law, Mollie Jones; granddaughter, Sharon Lynn Jones; an infant grandson and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her devoted son, Ben W. Jones Jr.; son-in-law, Merl Cornett; grandchildren, Wilson Jones and wife Donna, Dale Jones, Robin Cornett Davis and husband Wayne; great-grandson, Bradley Davis; great-granddaughter, DeAnna Holt; brother, W. Shepard Barlow, all of Smithfield; sister, Anna Barlow Elliott of Windsor; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held Sunday in St. Luke’s Memorial Park with the Rev. Joseph Talley officiating.
Colonial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
