The Southampton County School Board on Monday added AGAPE Counseling & Therapeutic Services Inc. to the list of counseling services it recommends to parents.

At the board’s monthly meeting, Superintendent Charles Turner described the counseling list as a “parent referral,” a source that gives parents a list of resources to contact in times of need.

Turner emphasized AGAPE’s previous work in the community and said its addition to the list will make parents more aware of the organization’s availability and allow more children to benefit from it.

“Anytime you work with a child outside of school, even if they are already part of the school environment, you help them to be more productive,” Turner said.

According to Dr. Wayne Smith, director of administration and middle school instruction, adding the service to the list poses no financial cost for the school system.

Also during the meeting, the board congratulated Southampton High School after WHRO, a Norfolk public broadcasting network, chose the school as the WHRO High School of the Month. The school will be featured this month on the WHRO television program “School Talk Monthly.” The program will air at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21.
