Chris Howard rushed for 79 yards to lead Blessed Sacrament Huguenot past Southampton Academy 35-7 in a Virginia Commonwealth Conference game Friday.

In a game dominated by the Knights, turnovers killed the home team.

The Raiders lost four fumbles, two of which were run back for touchdowns by the Knights.

The Raiders had 130 yards of offense, with 69 rushing yards and 61 passing. The Raiders were led in rushing by Jacob Rose, who had six carries for 28 yards. Through the air the Raiders were led by Tyler Lass, who went 5-for-11 for 54 yards with one interception. David Bogese had two catches for 22 yards.

The Raiders scored their one and only touchdown of the night off a 56-yard scoring drive, capped by a 1-yard run by Bogese with 1:39 left in the game.

“I think we didn’t compete well tonight, and we didn’t compete very well against Isle of Wight, but next year when our guys are juniors and seniors, I think it will be a different story,” said SA head coach Dale Marks. “Next season starts after a week off for the team.”

Marks said his squad was “three fumbles away from being a 7-3 team, and with two seniors and three juniors, to be a couple of turnovers from being 7-3 is not bad. It was not a totally lost season. We were 5-5. A lot of people out there would love to be 5-5.”

“To prepare for next season we gotta get in the weight room, get bigger, stronger, and faster. We only have two seniors on this team, and hopefully only two kids out here that won’t be back from the team we had out here tonight. With some more ninth-graders that will be joining the team next year, and getting all the kids a year older, stronger, more mature maybe we can make a run to the playoffs next season.”
