WAKEFIELD—Alma L. O’Berry, 93, died Oct. 28, 2008, at Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk.
Born September 29, 1915 in Nansemond County, she was the daughter of the late Eugene Riddick and Hettie Daughtrey Lassiter.
She was the widow of John H. O’Berry who died in 1972.
Mrs. O’Berry was a talented, loving person and worked all her life with flowers, gardening, crafts, cooking and catering. She worked in Suffolk for many years for Planters and then later for Webb Pinner Florist.
In 1950, she opened Wakefield Flower and Beauty Shop that later became O’Berry’s Florist.
She also catered and handled many weddings throughout her 40 years of business.
She loved gardening, cooking, catering and visiting with family and friends.
She was a member of the Wakefield Baptist Church.
Survivors include her two sons, Donald O’Berry, John D. O’Berry and his wife, Jackie, both of Wakefield; a sister, Jean L. Pauli of Mechanicsville; four grandchildren, Donna Coffey and husband the Rev. Patrick Coffey of Hayes, Shari Ashmore and husband James of Norfolk, John Charles (Jay) O’Berry and wife Lynnette of Sedley, and Jennifer O’Berry-Ham and husband Troy of Roanoke; four great grandchildren, Aaron and Sara Coffey, Ashley O’Berry and Johnathan G. Ham.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Norman Eugene Lassiter, Joseph Harold Lassiter, and Robert D. Lassiter; and two sisters, Margaret L. Lux, and Frances L. Early Gay.
A funeral service will be held today at 1 p.m. at Wakefield Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. James H. Kerr.
Burial will follow in Wakefield Cemetery.
The family will receive family and friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.
