FRANKLIN—The Western Tidewater Hurricanes finished up the fall baseball season last weekend by winning the Harvest Blast Tournament played at Paul D. Camp Community College.

The Hurricanes hosted the Virginia Nitros and the Virginia Blasters on Sunday for a sanctioned USSSA 11-and-under AA tournament.

The 11-and-under team won its last five games and hopes to carry over the momentum into next spring, when it plans to play in two or three tournaments.

The Hurricanes have players from Franklin and Southampton/Sussex counties who also participate in the Sussex/Southampton Pony League or the Franklin Recreational League during the spring.

Coaches Mark Lowe, David Peck and Brian Harrup commended support from parents, grandparents, friends and families of the players.

“We all feel this past spring and fall was a huge success for our community, and we hope it can continue for years to come,” Peck said. “We also want to thank all those businesses and people who gave us help financially as we could have not played in any tournaments without their support.

“And last but not least, none of this could have been possible without the support of Butch Turner, Eldridge Beale, Frank Davis and the City of Franklin, who so unselfishly worked with us in having a place to practice and play all year long.”

In Game 1, Western Tidewater defeated the Virginia Blasters 11-3. In Game 2, the Blasters beat the Virginia Nitros 11-3. In Game 3, the Hurricanes beat the Nitros 14-6.

In the championship game, Western Tidewater whipped the Blasters 9-1.
