Southampton High School jumped out to an early lead but could not hold it as Bruton dropped the Indians 14-7 in a Bay Rivers District game Friday.

In a defensive battle, the Indians (1-5) opened the scoring when Calvin Stringfield scored on a 2-yard run. Anthony Boone kicked the extra point to give Southampton a 7-0 lead with 7:45 left in the first quarter.

Bruton countered with two touchdowns in the first half as the teams had a scoreless battle in the second half.

Stringfield led the Southampton rushing attack with 93 yards on 19 carries, and Andre Rawls rushed for 32 yards on 14 carries.

“They played a good ball game. It might even be one of their better games played all year,” said Littleton Parker, Southampton head coach. “It was a strong defensive effort.”
