ISLE OF WIGHT — A Smithfield man was killed Oct. 2 when his pickup truck crashed and burned after hitting an oncoming cement mixer.

The accident occurred at about 1:35 p.m. on Virginia Route 10, about a quarter-mile west of the intersection with Route 677, Wrenns Mill Road, according to Sgt. Michelle Cotten of the Virginia State Police.

Nathanial John Locke, 32, of the 14000 block of Carroll Bridge Road, was operating a 2008 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, and traveling westbound on Route 10, when he drifted into the eastbound lanes and struck a 2006 Mack truck cement mixer, Cotten said.

After striking the cement mixer, Cotten said, Locke’s vehicle left the road, went through a fence and caught on fire.

According to Cotten, Locke could not exit his vehicle after the crash and burned to death.

The driver of the cement mixer was not identified. No charges were filed in the crash.

Cotten said that police were not able to determine if alcohol was a factor in the collision.
