The main unit of the Southampton Correctional Center, a state prison near Capron, will close as part of state budget cuts announced today by Gov. Tim Kaine.

About 600 prisoners will be transferred to other facilities, and 116 employees will be laid off. The changes are expected to take effect by Jan. 25.
