Game of the Week: Franklin at Surry County

FRANKLIN—Franklin High School, which suffered its first loss of the season last Friday, opens its Tri-Rivers District schedule when the Broncos travel to Surry County (2-4).

Last season, Surry beat Franklin and went on to win the district. This year, Surry has struggled a bit.

The Cougars have lost to bigger opponents like Smithfield and Brunswick and suffered a 35-34 loss to Mathews on Sept. 29. Last week, Surry spanked King & Queen 50-18.

Franklin (4-1) will try to recover from a heartbreaking, last-second loss to Colonial Beach on Friday. The Broncos remain a viable contender for a Group A Region A Division 1 playoff spot.

The Broncos will look to jump on Surry early. The Cougars have not scored a point in the first quarter of any game this year.

The Broncos have had success over Surry in recent years. The Cougars beat Franklin 36-16 last year, but the Broncos have beaten Surry every year in the regular season since 2004. The Cougars did knock Franklin out of the playoffs in 2006.

■ Windsor (5-1) will also open its Tri-Rivers District season with a homecoming tilt against Charles City at 7 p.m. The Panthers are 0-5 but have been scoring points, averaging almost 20 per game. The Dukes need a win to stay in the race for a Group A Region A Division 2 playoff spot.

■ Fresh off its first win of the season, Southampton (1-4) will travel to Bruton for a Bay Rivers District contest at 7:30 p.m. The Panthers are 3-2 and have lost two straight games, including last Friday’s 34-13 decision to Jamestown. Southampton last beat Bruton in 2006.

■ Southampton Academy (4-2) will travel to Carlisle School for a non-conference game in Martinsville at 6 p.m. Carlisle is 3-3, having beaten Massanutten Military School 43-20 on Friday night.

■ Undefeated Isle of Wight Academy (6-0) will travel to winless Tidewater Academy (0-6) for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff in a Virginia Commonwealth Conference game.
