Barbara P. Camp
CHARLOTTESVILLE—Barbara Pease Camp, 77, died Oct. 3, 2008, at her residence.
Mrs. Camp was born April 15, 1931 in Buffalo, N.Y.
She was the daughter of the late Charles and Eunice Pease. She attended Syracuse University in New York and was an outstanding horsewoman.
She was the 1948 National Champion Equestrian Good Hands Medal and Maclay Medal winner and founder and President of the Virginia Pony Breeders Association.
She owned and showed the 1960 national high point horse “Sunset Hill.”
With her husband, Clay, Barbara worked as an agent at the Saratoga Yearling Sale, selling many of the top yearlings, including the record high price yearling at the Saratoga Sales in 1975 and 1984, a record sale that still holds today.
She served as a navigator on her husband’s U.S.E.T. combined driving team in three World Championships held in England, the Netherlands and Germany.
She was inducted into the Virginia Horse Show Association Hall of Fame.
Barbara and Clay owned and restored Glenmore Farms near Charlottesville and Highview Farm in Nelson County.
She received an award from the Adirondack Architectural Society for her work restoring several historical old camps in the Adirondack Mountains of New York.
She enjoyed spending time outdoors, whether gardening or fishing or just taking a walk in the woods.
She enjoyed her trips to the Florida Keys and her summers spent in the Adirondacks.
Survivors include her husband Clay Camp, Charlottesville; daughter Bunny Gibbons and Joel also of Charlottesville; a son Jeff Camp and Jennifer of Park City, Utah; two step-children, Page Camp and Clay Camp and Gail, all of Virginia Beach; two grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; brother-in-law, William Camp and sister-in-law Shirlie Camp of Franklin; and her very special friends, Beverly Ensor of Philadelphia, Pa. and Shelby Rasson of Charlottesville.
There will be a private memorial held at a later date.
