Franklin’s Adam Gillette snagged a touchdown pass and Hampden-Sydney College held off a furious Bridgewater comeback as the Tigers remained unbeaten with a 37-34 victory here Saturday.

Gillette, a junior wide receiver who prepped at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Corey Sedlar to put the Tigers up 20-6 midway of the second quarter.

Hampden-Sydney nearly gave up a 30-6 fourth-quarter lead. Bridgewater scored 28 points in the final period but fell just short. With the win, Hampden-Sydney improves to 5-0 overall, 2-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while Bridgewater dropped its fourth straight contest and falls to 1-4, 0-1.

Reserve Bridgewater quarterback Vince Reese tossed three fourth-period touchdowns, two on fourth-down plays, to lead the comeback charge and pull the Eagles within 37-34 with 4:32 to play in the game. But the Hampden-Sydney offense, which had been slowed significantly in the second half by a swarming Bridgewater defense, ran out the clock on its ensuing possession.

Gillette, the son of Walker and Becky Gillette, had three catches for 41 yards.
