Franklin suspends five football players

Five Franklin High School football players have been suspended for Friday night’s game with Colonial Beach.

Athletic Director Mona Sumblin confirmed the suspensions in a telephone interview Wednesday night. She did not release the names of the suspended players.

The suspensions stem from an incident that prematurely ended last week’s game with West Point.

Players on the Franklin High sideline stormed the field after a late Bronco touchdown, purportedly in response to some West Point players’ rough treatment of a FHS player after the play had ended. After restoring order, referees ended the game with about 2 minutes remaining and the Broncos leading 34-14.

Mike McCall, a spokesman for the Virginia High School League, the governing body for high school athletics in Virginia, said that Franklin was not required to release the names of the players.

This week’s game features two unbeaten teams. Franklin, 4-0, is tied for fourth in the VHSL Group A power rankings. Colonial Beach, 6-0, is tied for sixth.

The Drifters beat the Broncos twice last season, including in the regional playoffs.
